How to make a natural room spray is a subject I’ve been researching lately. So many of the room sprays and candles available contain some nasty chemicals which aren’t great for us to inhale and can add to the levels of toxicity in both our bodies and the environment, so why not make your own?

Not only do essential oils smell good but they each have well known properties which can enhance our sense of wellbeing. Essential oils can also provide a lovely way to support emotional and energetic wellbeing during grief. The smell from certain essential oils directly impacts the limbic system, the region of the brain that activates our fight-or-flight response, potentially helping with the release of challenging emotions. Essential oils affect the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which, once stimulated, release hormones into the body. For example, lavender essential oil can have a positive effect on sleep, by relaxing the muscles and allowing you to fall asleep more easily; this is a decision made by the body in the limbic system once the lavender essential oil vapour has been inhaled.
How to make a natural room spray
You will need:
- glass spray bottles – I buy mine from Amazon
- 25-30 drops of essential oil – I like doTerra, Neals Yard, Star Child or Amour Natural (good quality, reasonably priced and available from The Natural Dispensary)
- Witch hazel (also available from The Natural Dispensary)
- water
Add your chosen essential oils to the bottle Fill the bottle half full with witch hazel Top up with water and give a good shake to combine
My favourite essential oils and how to combine them in your room spray
Peppermint – good for sinuses, for staying alert when tired and for menopausal hot flushes. Also great to use if you have a cat litter tray, plus peppermint is believed to be a natural spider deterrent! I keep a peppermint room spray in the kitchen. Lavender and sweet orange – helpful for anxiety, headaches and for sleep. I spray this in the bedroom before sleep. Rose Geranium – for lifting mood and energy. Good one for the living room. Frankincense, lavender, rosemary and sandalwood – this is a combination that can be used for grief Rose and frankincense – good for hormonal balance These are just a few ideas to get you started. Natural room sprays also make lovely bespoke gifts 🙂 If you’d like to know more about the various ways you can support your wellbeing, please see here for what I offer or get in touch: vanessa@wellbeingandnutrition.co.uk
